MLSCN increases admission quota for UNICAL

The Registrar and Chief Executive Officer, Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN), Prof Tosan Erhabor has disclosed that the Council has increased the admission quota for the Medical Laboratory Science Program, University of Calabar (UNICAL) from the previous 100 to 200 slots to offer more opportunities to many seeking to join the profession.

The Prof Erhabor disclosed this in his speech during the 20th Induction/Oath-Taking Ceremony of the Medical Laboratory Sciences (MLS) of the University of Calabar held at the Institution’s International Conference Centre. In the induction ceremony involving 173 Graduating Students, MLSCN Registrar said that the upward review of the admission quota for UNICAL came on the heels of the Vice Chancellor’s request during his last visit to the institution.

The Registrar stated that the council will no longer tolerate institutions admitting beyond the approved quota, only to blame the Council adding that Universities must comply with the Council regulatory guidelines, especially in matters relating to student admission quota.

Prof Erhabor congratulated the 173 inductees who have been found worthy and capable of contributing positively to the growth of the health sector.

Speaking, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Prof. Florence Obi expressed delight over the inductees who made it despite the hurdles, subjecting themselves to the necessary and pivotal training which has prepared them for life, to make meaningful contributions to the well-being of society.

Represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Research, Linkages and Collaborations, Prof Peter Okafor, she charged the inductees to bring to all the knowledge acquired in the Course of training to bear in the practice of their profession represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Research, Linkages and Collaborations, Prof Peter Okafor, she charged the inductees to bring to all the knowledge acquired in the Course of training to bear in the practice of their profession.

The Vice-Chancellor urged them to remember their Alma mater by giving back to the institution, while advising them to ensure that their conduct promotes the reputation of the University, adding that their license and certificates can be withdrawn from them by the authorities for wrong representation.

Speaking also, the Provost of the College of Mediçal Sciences, Prof. Ngim E. Ngim congratulated the inductees and thanked their parents and sponsors for the steadfast support given to their children while urging the inductees to be guided by the principles and code of ethics of their Profession.

Speaking, The Dean of, the Faculty of Medical Laboratory Science Prof Paul C. Inyang-Etoh told the inductees that they have all it takes to build successful lives and careers as Medical Laboratory Scientists.

The Induction Lecturer, Prof Anne E. Asuquo spoke on “Entrepreneurship Skills for Medical Laboratory Science Professionals” stating that environmental skills are essential for success in the evolving healthcare landscape.

Prof Asuquo further stated the need for Medical Laboratory Science professionals to embrace entrepreneurship and pursue opportunities to develop and apply their skills. The Induction Lecturer further said that healthcare entrepreneurship encompasses a wide range of products and services that guarantee an economic return on investment and a positive product on society

The Registrar of the University of Calabar, Mr Gabriel Egbe charged the graduating students to justify the quality of training that they have received by giving their best to society and mankind.

In her speech, the overall best graduating BMLS student, Miss Emmanuella Okubike expressed appreciation to God for seeing her and her colleagues through the academic pursuit and assured the institution that they will be good ambassadors.
