The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has officially released the results of the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for school candidates. The announcement was made by Mr. Amos Dangut, Head of the National Office (HNO) in Nigeria, during a press briefing held in Lagos on Monday.
Decline in Performance Compared to 2024
Mr. Dangut revealed a significant drop in overall student performance, especially in the number of candidates who earned credit passes in the key subjects of English Language and Mathematics.
Out of the 1,973,365 candidates registered across 23,554 recognised secondary schools in Nigeria, a total of 1,969,313 candidates actually sat for the examination, which was held between April and June 2025.
Of those who sat the exam:
- 1,718,090 candidates (87.24%) obtained credit and above in at least five subjects, regardless of English Language and Mathematics.
- However, only 754,545 candidates (38.32%) secured credit passes in at least five subjects including English and Mathematics, which are required for admission into most tertiary institutions.
This marks a dramatic decline from the 72.12% success rate recorded in 2024 — a 33.8% drop in performance.
Gender and Special Needs Breakdown
WAEC also released a gender analysis of the 2025 candidates:
- Male Candidates: 976,787 (49.60%)
- Female Candidates: 992,526 (50.40%)
In its commitment to inclusivity, the council registered 12,178 candidates with special needs, including:
- 112 visually impaired
- 615 with hearing impairments
- 52 with mental health challenges
- 37 physically challenged candidates
WAEC confirmed that all special needs candidates received appropriate support, and their results have also been released.

- 1,517,517 results (77.06%) have been fully processed and published.
- 451,796 results (22.94%) are still pending due to ongoing validation and processing.
- WAEC assured that these pending results will be released in the coming days.

A total of 192,089 results (9.75%) are currently withheld due to various allegations of examination malpractice. According to WAEC, the infractions include:
