UNIPORT Postgraduate Admission Guide for 2025/2026 Academic Session


The University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) invites qualified candidates to apply for admission into its full-time, part-time, and sandwich postgraduate programmes for the 2025/2026 academic session.


Available Programmes

Postgraduate opportunities are available at the following levels:

  • Postgraduate Diploma (PGD)
  • Master’s Degrees (M.A., M.Sc., M.Ed., MLIS, MFA, etc.)
  • Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.)

These programmes are offered across various faculties including:

  • Humanities
  • Communication and Media Studies
  • Education
  • Social Sciences
  • Science
  • Management Sciences and other specialized centres.

General Admission Requirements

1. Postgraduate Diploma (PGD):

  • Applicants must hold at least a Third Class Honours Degree or Higher National Diploma (Upper Credit) in a related discipline.

2. Master’s Degree (M.A./M.Sc./M.Ed., etc.):

  • Candidates must possess at least a Second Class Lower Degree or its equivalent in a relevant field.
  • Some departments may require work experience or a qualifying test/interview.

3. Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.):

  • Applicants must hold a Master’s degree in a related discipline with a minimum CGPA of 3.50 on a 5-point scale.
  • Candidates are expected to submit and successfully defend a research proposal at an oral interview.

Specific Faculty Highlights

  • Humanities: Programmes are available in English Studies, Theatre Arts, History, Linguistics, Philosophy, Religious Studies, and Fine Arts.
  • Communication and Media Studies: Includes Journalism, Public Relations, Broadcasting, and Film & Multimedia Studies.
  • Education: Offers both full-time and part-time options in Curriculum Studies, Educational Foundations, Management, Psychology, Guidance & Counselling, and Business Education.
  • Social Sciences: Available programmes include Economics, Sociology, Political Science, Geography, and Library & Information Science.
